A guy visiting a friend down at Fisherman's Wharf at the Harbor in Oxnard called me and got right to it. He had a 2011 Ford Fusion, one working key, and a question: "Is the key going to be as good as the dealer one, or is this a backup I throw in a drawer?"
Fair question.
OEM Ford keys for this car come from Strattec, part number 164-R8070, with the Ford oval on the back and a price to match. The aftermarket blanks I carry use the same H75 blade profile, same OUCD6000022 circuit board layout, same 4D63 80-bit transponder chip that the PATS module expects. The functional difference in daily use is zero if the blank is good quality. And mine are, because I test every batch before it goes in the van. Bad batches go back. Thin housings that crack in a pocket, generic chips that almost match but throw a theft light on a cold morning. I have seen all of it and I do not carry any of it.
I cut the blade on the Fusion's tailgate, programmed the new key through the OBD-II port, and had him test it three times cold. Lock, unlock, start. Then I handed it over and told him the truth: no Ford logo on the back, same everything else, and a good chunk less than the dealer would have charged.
He put it on his main keyring right there. Not a drawer key.
