2016 Ford Fusion
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2016 Fusion?

The 2016 Fusion smart key is a proximity fob that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer and body control systems wirelessly. When the fob is close enough, the car recognizes it and allows the push-button start to function. It also handles remote lock and unlock through its five buttons. What that means practically: the fob has to be both present and properly registered to the car.

Q: What equipment do you actually use to program a 2016 Fusion smart key?

For the 2016 Fusion, key registration goes through the OBD port using a professional immobilizer programmer with current Ford coverage. This isn't a job for a generic code reader. The tools that matter here are ones that can communicate with the body control module and handle key memory management, including all-keys-lost scenarios where every registered fob needs to be wiped and new ones enrolled from scratch.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my 2016 Fusion?

Maybe. It depends on what you bought. Aftermarket fobs vary. Some work fine once programmed. Others have firmware or hardware that doesn't pair correctly with the Fusion's system even when the tool says it succeeded. The factory fob for this car is a known quantity. Aftermarket is a roll of the dice, and if it doesn't take, you've paid for a part that's now useless. If you already have it, bring it.

Q: My 2016 Fusion fob range has gotten really short lately. Is it dying?

Short range on these is almost always the battery before it's anything else. The fob runs two CR2025 cells, and they can degrade unevenly. The car might still start, the buttons might still work close up, but you lose range well before the fob fails entirely. Swap both cells at the same time and see if that fixes it before assuming something is wrong with the fob itself.

2016 Ford Fusion Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Construction site off Telephone Road in Saticoy. 6:47 in the morning.

A guy calls me, already standing outside his 2016 Fusion, foreman on site and his shift starting in thirteen minutes. The push-button start had gone dark overnight. No response from the fob, no chime, nothing. He'd tried holding the fob up to the start button the way someone told him once, and it did exactly nothing.

I was rolling before 7. Got there in under 25 minutes because Saticoy at that hour is quiet.

First thing I did was pop the fob open right there on the hood of my van. Two CR2025s in the tray, and the bottom one was reading almost zero on my tester. The top one still had some juice, which is probably why the car gave him just enough grief to be confusing instead of just failing clean. Swapped both cells, reseated the tray, handed it back.

Still had a key-not-detected warning on the cluster. That told me the fob wasn't the whole story. Plugged in through the OBD port, pulled the stored fault, cleared it, ran a fresh key registration. The system came back, recognized the fob, and the start button lit up like nothing happened.

Start to finish, about 22 minutes on site. He clocked in late but not embarrassingly late. Said his foreman didn't even give him a hard time.

He also took the spare fob I had staged for his glove box, because doing this twice is worse than doing it once.

Ford Fusion Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things. First, search the business name and check that the phone number matches what's listed on Google and Yelp. Scam outfits often run call centers with numbers that trace back to nothing local. Second, ask for a firm price on the phone for your specific year and model. A real locksmith will ask what you're driving and give you a number before they show up. If they won't commit until they're standing next to your car, that's your signal.
