Got a call from a guy out near McGrath State Beach in Oxnard. He had a 1995 Civic DX, the coupe, parked at the campground lot. His only key snapped clean off in the driver door lock. The blade broke right at the bow, so half the key was still jammed in the cylinder.
He had already called a dealer. They told him they would need the car towed in, and they could not guarantee same-day turnaround because key cutting for older Civics is not something they keep set up for. He did not love that answer.
I got out there, extracted the broken blade from the door lock with a spiral extractor, and it came out in one piece. That matters because once I had both halves, I could read the full bitting and cut a fresh HD103 blank to match. No need to pull the ignition cylinder, no code lookup, just a clean read off the original.
Cut the new key on my mobile machine, tested the driver door, passenger door, trunk, and ignition. Everything turned smooth. The whole job took maybe 25 minutes including drive time.
He looked at the broken key pieces in his hand, then at the new one, and just shook his head. Said he figured he was going to miss the afternoon. Instead he was back on the road before the parking meter would have run out, for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost in towing alone.
