Out near Erbes Road Estates on a Saturday morning, I got a call from a woman who volunteers at a local temple. She was frustrated before I even pulled up. She told me she'd already paid another locksmith for this exact job, and the car still wouldn't stay running.
The situation was textbook. She'd turn the key, the engine would crank and fire, run for about two seconds, then die. She'd been told it was a module problem and the other tech had walked away. It wasn't a module problem.
What happened was the previous attempt at programming never completed the full registration sequence. Honda's immobilizer system on this generation requires the security handshake to run through a timed countdown before the new key data gets written to permanent memory. Rush it, interrupt it, or skip a confirmation step, and the system appears to accept the key temporarily. Then it doesn't. The car cranks, the engine fires on the first burst, and the immobilizer kills fuel injection right after. Every time.
I decoded the mechanical cut first to confirm the blade was correct for the ignition cylinder. It was. Then I connected through the OBD port with my programmer, cleared the incomplete key data from the previous attempt, and ran a clean immobilizer learn from scratch with the full security timer allowed to complete. When the confirmation came through on my screen, I had her try the key herself.
It started and stayed running. She held it at idle for a solid minute just to be sure. I don't blame her.
She'd already lost money to the first guy, which wasn't something I could fix. But the job was done right this time, for a fraction of what the dealer would have charged her, and she drove home instead of waiting for a tow.
