Over in the Conejo Oaks neighborhood in Thousand Oaks, a woman flagged me down in a parking lot on a Saturday. She volunteers at a nearby temple and told me she'd already been burned once. Another locksmith had cut her a new key for her 2004 Honda Civic, charged full price, and left when it didn't work. The car would crank, run for two seconds, then die. The other tech told her the module was bad. It wasn't.
What happened was simpler and more frustrating. Honda's IMMO2 system requires the full timed registration sequence to write key data permanently. If you rush it or skip the security countdown, the PCM accepts the transponder data temporarily but never commits it. The key looks learned. Then it isn't.
I used my HON66 Lishi to confirm the mechanical cut was correct, at least that part was fine. Then I connected through OBD-II with my IM608, cleared the ghost key data from the failed attempt, and ran a clean IMMO learn with the full security timer. Watched the T5 chip register, watched the PCM confirm the write.
Clean start. No two-second fuel cutoff. I showed her the confirmation screen so she could see the key was fully stored this time.
She'd already paid the first guy, and I couldn't fix that part. But I could make sure the car actually started when she turned the key.
