Over near Surfers Point in Ventura, a woman flagged me down in a parking lot on a Saturday. She told me another locksmith had already come out for her 2011 Civic. He'd cut and programmed a new key, but the car would crank for about two seconds and then die. Classic immobilizer fuel cutoff. The other tech told her the IMMO unit on the car was bad and left.
The car didn't have a module problem. It had a locksmith problem.
Honda's 8th-gen Civic runs the HITAG2 crypto system on a 46 (G) chip. The immobilizer registration needs a full timed security handshake through OBD. If you rush it or drop out mid-sequence, the PCM accepts the key data temporarily but never commits it to permanent memory. The engine cranks, the IMMO check fails, fuel injection gets killed.
I used a HON66 Lishi to verify the cut was at least right mechanically. It was. Then I connected my IM608 through the DLC, cleared the botched key data from the first attempt, and ran a clean IMMO learn with the full security countdown. Watched the confirmation write to the PCM. All four buttons on the N5F-S0084A responded, and the engine ran clean with no two-second cutoff.
She'd already paid the first guy too, and I couldn't help with that part. But I could make sure the key actually worked this time, on site, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
