2006 Honda Civic
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: My dealer told me I have to tow my Civic in for an all-keys-lost job. Is that true?

It's true that the dealer needs the car at their location. It is not true that the dealer is your only option. We come to wherever the Civic is sitting, whether that's a driveway in Lynn Ranch or a parking lot in Thousand Oaks. The OBD-II procedure runs the same whether the car is in a dealership bay or in your spot at home. Towing adds cost and hassle before the dealer even touches the key.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost appointment take for a 2006 Civic?

Usually 45 to 60 minutes on site. That covers connecting to the vehicle, running the key registration procedure, cutting the blade, and testing both the transponder and the remote functions on every button. The dealer may quote a similar labor window, but the real time from your end is much longer once you add towing, check-in, waiting on parts, and getting the car back. One visit to your location, and it's done.

Q: My 2006 Civic starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On this remote head key, the transponder that starts the car and the remote transmitter that runs the lock and unlock functions are independent of each other. If the car starts but the buttons are dead, the first thing to check is the CR1616 battery. This is a thinner cell and it is the correct one for this fob.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

The short answer is no, not on this one. The 2006 Civic does not have a driver-operated button sequence or ignition-turn trick that lets you add a new remote head key at home. Registration requires going through the vehicle's immobilizer system via the OBD-II port with professional equipment. A fob bought online still needs a technician to pair it. The blade also needs to be cut to your specific vehicle.

2006 Honda Civic Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Lynn Ranch sits up in the hills east of Lynn Road, where the streets curve and the driveways get long. Not the kind of neighborhood where a tow truck maneuvers easily.

I got a call from a guy who had been storing some things at a self-storage facility over in Thousand Oaks. He'd found me months before watching a Honda key replacement on my channel, saw the whole job filmed at the car, and saved the number. When his 2006 Civic key finally gave out, he didn't have to wonder who to call or what the process looked like. He already knew.

By the time I showed up, he had two problems. The blade was worn enough that it was getting finicky in the ignition, and the remote had been hit-or-miss for a while. He'd been living with both issues longer than he should have.

I cut a fresh replacement blade matched to his Civic, ran the immobilizer procedure through the OBD-II port to register the new key to the car, then went through the remote pairing. After that I walked every button, checked start three times, and tested the range out toward the gate of the lot.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number he wasn't happy about, which is why he'd been sitting on it. The job got done in his parking spot that afternoon for a fraction of what they wanted, and he didn't have to figure out how to get a keyless car across town to a shop.

Honda Civic Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2006 Honda Civic. Can you still make one?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on this generation Civic is a standard on-site job. We connect to the OBD-II port, run the immobilizer registration procedure to clear the old keys and enroll a new one, cut a fresh blade, and pair the remote functions. You end up with a fully working key without towing anywhere.
