2018 Honda Civic Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over in The Avenue in Ventura, a security guard called me late on a weeknight. He worked overnight shifts and his only fob had stopped communicating with the car entirely. The Civic was sitting in his garage with no key the vehicle would recognize, and push-button start wasn't doing anything. He'd already looked up tow companies.
I told him to stay put.
When I got there I asked him when he'd last changed the battery. He said never, and the car was a few years old at that point. Popped the fob open and the battery had a faint film of oxidation on the positive face. Swapped it, reseated everything, and tried the start button. Still nothing. At that point the fob itself had failed, not just the cell.
I connected to the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the Honda smart key system. That process clears the vehicle's stored key memory and re-enrolls new fobs from scratch. New fob, fresh battery, ran through enrollment, tested every function including the door handles and the start button. Done in his garage around 11pm.
He said he'd mentally already written off the next two days to dealer appointments and a tow. The dealer comparison came up on its own, and his number from a quick search earlier that night was a good chunk more than what he paid me. I didn't bring it up. He did.
