I was out in Poinsettia on a Tuesday afternoon for a guy who'd already been through the parts-store battery swap twice. He had a 2013 Civic, remote head key, and the car wouldn't start. Not a no-crank, no-start. The key would turn, the starter would spin, and then nothing. Engine fired for half a second and cut out. Classic immobilizer behavior when the transponder inside the key head isn't being read correctly.
He'd found me through YouTube a while back, same way a few people do. He said he watched a Honda key job all the way through and felt like he understood what he was actually paying for before he ever called. I appreciate that. No surprises on either end.
I pulled up to his driveway, popped the key open right there on the hood of the Civic. The CR1616 was seated, but the contact on the positive side had a slight upward bow to it. Enough to lose connection under vibration or after a bumpy drive. Rebent the contact, seated a fresh CR1616, and then we still had the transponder issue to sort since the original programming had flagged out.
Programmed the replacement key on site. Tested the start three times, ran every button, walked to the end of the driveway to check range. He was back in the car in under an hour.
The dealer had already given him a number over the phone. I'll just say he kept a good chunk of that in his pocket.
