Got a call from a muffler shop over in the Wildwood neighborhood in Thousand Oaks. A guy's 2002 Civic was sitting in their bay, dead in the water. Another locksmith had tried an all-keys-lost job on it, the car battery sagged mid-programming, and the immobilizer module threw a fault and locked up. That locksmith packed his stuff and told the customer to tow it to Honda. The muffler shop guys found my number instead.
When I got there I checked voltage first. Battery was sitting at 11.4, which explained everything. A power dip during the security handshake on these older Honda IMMO1 systems can push the module into a fault state where it just refuses to talk. I clamped my jump pack to the terminals to hold steady voltage, then used my IM608 to clear the DTC out of the immobilizer before starting fresh.
Clean sequence, stable power, and the new transponder key with the T5 chip programmed on the first pass. Turned the key, engine caught right away. I walked the muffler shop guys through what happened so they would know to mention battery voltage if a locksmith ever showed up to do key work in their lot again.
Whole thing took about an hour and a half, which is longer than a normal Civic key job. But it got done same-day, on-site, for a fraction of what a flatbed ride to the dealer and a multi-day wait would have cost him.
