2000 Honda Civic
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Three things to ask any locksmith before they drive to you: license number, company name, and a firm price for your specific vehicle. Scam operations quote a low number on the phone and then find reasons to inflate it once they're in your driveway. I give you a real price on the call for your actual car, show up in a marked vehicle, and that number doesn't move. The license is real and searchable.

Q: Will the replacement key and fob work exactly like the original?

Yes. The 2000 Civic uses a separate fob and a transponder ignition key, and we handle both. The fob gets programmed for lock, unlock, and the other buttons. The transponder gets registered to the immobilizer so the engine starts. Before I leave the car, I walk every function: remote lock, remote unlock, the remaining fob buttons, and an actual engine start. If anything is off, I catch it on site.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2000 Civic. Can I program it myself?

For the remote fob on this generation Civic, there is an onboard programming sequence that some owners have had success with. It involves the driver door and the ignition in a specific timed pattern. The catch is that it can be finicky, it only works if your existing fob is present to initiate the sequence, and it programs the remote functions only. The transponder chip in the key blade is a separate matter entirely and does require proper programming equipment.

Q: My 2000 Civic starts fine but the fob range got really short. What's going on?

Almost always the CR2025. These batteries drop off gradually, and by the time range gets noticeably bad the battery is usually close to dead. Swap it first. If fresh battery doesn't fix it, the fob may have taken a hit or gotten wet at some point, which can damage the internal board. The other thing that kills range on these older fobs is a bent or corroded battery contact inside the case. That's a quick fix if caught early.

2000 Honda Civic Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already in the Botanic Garden Area side of Thousand Oaks when the call came in. Guy needed his car running, and he needed it running now. His 2000 Civic was sitting in a pharmacy parking lot. He'd been pressing the fob button and getting nothing, and by the time he realized the car itself wouldn't start either, he was already frustrated and late.

He was diabetic. His insulin run had turned into a parking lot situation, and the dealer had offered him an appointment the next morning like that was a reasonable answer.

He called me instead. I was there in about fifteen minutes.

The fob was easy. CR2025 was completely dead, and once I swapped it the remote came back to life. But the car still wouldn't start. He mentioned he'd gotten a jump start earlier that week after leaving his lights on. That kind of power disruption can knock the transponder out of sync with the immobilizer, and that's exactly what happened here. I ran the programming through the OBD port, re-synced the transponder, and the Civic started without a complaint.

I tested every button on the fob and confirmed the engine start before I packed up. Then I walked him through what to do if the fob battery ever dies again and he needs to get moving without it. Took about forty minutes total.

He made it to the pharmacy. The dealer's next-day slot sat empty.

Honda Civic Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Honda vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz holds a locksmith license issued by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, and we carry full liability insurance. You can ask for the license number before I show up and verify it directly with the state. For a 2000 Civic, the job is well within standard locksmith scope. No dealer authorization needed, no factory security portal access required on a vehicle this age. Just the right tools and the right training.
