A guy in Lang Ranch called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He had a 2005 Honda Civic, one key, and a blade that had been slowly working loose from the head for about a week. He was wiggling it to get it seated in the ignition every morning. That day it finally gave out completely, snapping at the neck where the plastic meets the blade.

I moved to the replacement. The transponder chip from his original key was intact inside the head, but the housing was cracked through, so I was working with a fresh blank. Cut the blade on my machine in the van, then ran the programming sequence. On this generation Civic, when you have a working key and are adding a spare, there is an onboard sequence you can run through the ignition. Since his only key was now in pieces, I used my programmer to enroll the new key directly.
First turn, the security light cleared and the engine ran clean. He asked me the same thing that guy always asks: is this as good as what Honda would have made? I told him the blade is cut to the same specification, the chip talks to the same immobilizer, and the key does the same one job this car asks of it. He drove off and I headed back toward the 101.
The dealer quote he had gotten earlier that week was going to take two days and cost him significantly more. He mentioned it almost as a footnote, like he had already moved on.
