2023 Honda Civic Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
The call came in from Village at the Park in Camarillo. A couple, newer to the neighborhood, had been down to one key on their 2023 Civic for a while. Never got around to getting a spare. Then their only fob cracked at the pivot point and the blade snapped off mid-use, stuck in the door lock. One hand holding the remote head, the other hand staring at the stub in the cylinder. Zero working keys.
The car was sitting on the street and they needed to be somewhere.
The good news in that situation is that the chip inside the fob housing is usually still alive even when the plastic shell is cracked and the blade is gone. I checked the fob head first. The chip was intact. That mattered because it meant I could work from what was already registered to the car rather than starting from scratch with a full all-keys-lost procedure, which takes longer and costs more.
I extracted the blade fragment from the door lock, decoded the lock cylinder, and cut two new key blades to match. Then I transferred the chip from the cracked housing into a new shell and verified communication with the vehicle. Second key got programmed on top of that. I walked both keys through every function before I packed up.
Start to finish, about 40 minutes on the curb in front of their building. They had two working keys and understood why having a backup matters before you actually need it, not after.
The dealer had already been called before me. The quote they got assumed a full replacement from nothing, and it was not close to what I charged. They mentioned the number and kind of laughed about it. I just nodded and handed them both keys.
