Over near the Ventura Promenade, a warehouse stocker flagged me down about his 2014 Civic EX. Another locksmith had made him a replacement smart key about a week earlier. It worked fine for the first few days, then started throwing "KEY NOT DETECTED" on the dash by evening, even though it started the car that same morning.
He thought the car had an electrical problem. It didn't. The key was the problem.
I pulled his bad fob apart on the hood and ran it through my VVDI2. The previous locksmith had loaded the wrong transponder profile. The 2014 Civic EX smart key needs an ID47 chip running Honda's HITAG2/AES protocol on the PCF7953X module. A close-but-wrong chip can pass initial registration through the OBD port but fail after the immobilizer runs its deeper rolling verification over multiple drive cycles. That is exactly what happened here.
His CR2032 was also halfway dead, which made the intermittent detection even worse. Two problems stacked on top of each other.
I programmed a new proximity fob with the correct ID47 profile matched to his car, part number 72147-T2A-A01, swapped in a fresh CR2032, and walked all four buttons plus the push-button start through multiple cycles. He stood there watching the dash the whole time, waiting for the error to come back. It didn't.
That key has been working for months. The difference between a key that works and a key that works for a week is the chip generation inside it.
