Out in Saticoy, I got a call from a guy whose 2015 Civic had been sitting in his driveway for two days. He had one fob, it stopped working, and he was doing the thing people do when they don't want to believe it: clicking the buttons repeatedly like the tenth press was going to be different.
When I pulled up, he handed me the fob and said he had already put in a new battery. I popped it open right there on the hood. The battery was seated fine, but the positive contact clip was barely touching the cell face. Just slightly sprung out. He had pried the old battery out with a flathead, and the clip caught it on the way.
I reset the clip, seated the CR2032 firmly, and snapped the fob closed. Tried it from the driveway. Doors locked, doors unlocked, the car recognized the fob on approach. He looked at me like I had done something I wasn't telling him about.
Then I did the part he didn't expect. I walked all four buttons, tested range from across the driveway, and started the car three times in a row, shutting it down between each one, watching the dash for anything odd. He thought I was done after the first start. I wasn't.
He didn't need a new fob. He needed someone to actually look at the one he had. That's the job.
