Got a call from a guy at The Oaks Mall in Thousand Oaks. His 2008 Civic wouldn't start. Key turned, dash lit up, fuel pump primed, but the engine just cranked and quit. Green key icon blinking on the dash, which on 8th-gen Civics means the immobilizer is rejecting the transponder signal.
He told me the key had been "a little wobbly" for months. When I looked at it, the plastic head was cracked right along that bridge where the blade anchors in. The split was just wide enough that the ID46 transponder chip had shifted inside the housing. It was still physically in there, but it had moved just enough to throw off the coupling with the coil antenna around the ignition.
I set up on the hood, popped the old shell, pulled the chip and the remote board, and transferred everything into a fresh aftermarket shell with a new uncut blade. Cut the blade to code using his door lock decode. Seated the chip snug, closed it up.
Three starts in a row, no blinking green key. Then I walked the remote: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, all four buttons, tested range from about 30 feet out in the parking lot. Everything clean.
He kept looking at the old cracked shell on the hood. Said he almost went to the dealer that morning but the wait was two days out and he needed the car for work tomorrow. Whole thing took me about 25 minutes on site.
