Out in Newbury Park, near the shopping center off Wendy Drive, I got a call from a guy who was convinced his 2007 Civic had an electrical problem. It would start fine in the morning. Then by the time his shift ended, he'd turn the key and get nothing but a key warning on the dash. Crank, no start. He had already been to another locksmith.
The story came out in pieces. The other locksmith had cut and programmed a replacement key for him about ten days earlier. It worked for a week, then the car started rejecting it. He figured the immobilizer had gone bad.
When I got there, I pulled out my programmer and read what was actually in the key. The chip inside was not right for this application. Some chips look similar and will pass the initial enrollment, but the vehicle's security system runs additional verification over the first several drive cycles. A close-but-wrong chip can clear day one and fail by day eight. That is exactly what happened here.
I also popped open the remote head and found the CR1616 battery reading low. Two problems feeding off each other, which made the whole thing harder to pin down without the right equipment.
I cut a fresh blade, used the correct chip, enrolled it through the OBD port, and replaced the battery while I was in there. Then I did what you always do: stayed parked, cycled the ignition a few times, walked the lock and unlock, and did not leave until I had confirmed it was behaving consistently.
He asked me what the dealer would have charged. I told him a lot more, and they would have wanted him to tow it in first. He had already wasted time and money on the first locksmith. The second call, done right, cost him a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
