A food truck operator over in the Westlake Village area called me early one morning. His 2001 Honda Civic key had snapped clean in the ignition. Half the blade was jammed in the cylinder, the other half was in his hand. He couldn't turn the car off right and was scared to force anything. I could hear it in his voice when he called.
I got there and used my HO01 Lishi to pull the broken piece out without chewing up the ignition wafers. Once it came out clean, I decoded the lock right off the cylinder and cut a fresh HD106 blank from those readings. His car runs a separate remote fob for locks, so the fob was fine sitting on his dash the whole time. I just needed to cut a new blade and get the T5 transponder chip registered to the immobilizer.
One programming cycle through the ECU and it took. He turned the key and the Civic started like nothing happened.
Back on the road in under an hour from the first phone call. A dealer would have meant a tow, a wait for parts, and a bill that made the snapped key feel like the small problem. For these older Civics, this is one of the simplest jobs I do.
