A woman flagged me down in the Costco lot off Tapo Canyon Road in Simi Valley. Not a scheduled call. She saw the van, read the side, and walked over with her Prius key in her hand asking if I could make a spare.
She had one working key left. The other one went through the wash a few months back and the 4C glass transponder inside cracked. The key still turned the cylinder but the immobilizer light on the dash just blinked and the engine would crank with no start. She had been driving on a single key since then, which is the kind of thing that feels fine until it isn't.
Her 2001 Prius uses the NHW11 platform with the older Toyota immobilizer system. The 4C chip is a fixed-code transponder, so registration is done through the ECU's key teach-in procedure via OBD. I connected my Smart Pro to the diagnostic port under the dash, pulled the immobilizer data, and wrote a fresh 4C chip to a new TOY43 blank. Cut the blade to match her working key, then tested both keys through full start cycles.
The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes. She stood there holding both keys like she was making sure one wouldn't disappear.
Dealer would have wanted her to leave the car for half a day and pay a lot more for the same result. She got it done in a parking lot on her lunch break.
