2021 Toyota Prius
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2021 Toyota Prius Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already in Via Marina finishing another job when the call came in. A woman in a hospital parking lot in Oxnard, 8pm, her kid freshly discharged, and the Prius fob had gone completely dark. She said she had tried the backup procedure, holding the fob against the start button the way the manual describes. Nothing. The car just sat there.

She had already called the dealer. Closed for the night.

By the time I pulled in next to the Prius, she had a tired kid on her hip and that look people get when they have been holding it together for too long. I got the door open, checked the fob first. Popped it apart right there on the hood. The CR2032 was not just dead, the positive contact inside had a thin layer of corrosion on it, the kind that builds up slowly and then one day the key just stops working entirely. The backup antenna never got a clean read.

New fob, enrolled it through the OBD port with the diagnostic tool, tested every button, tested the start, walked all four doors. The whole thing took just under 45 minutes.

She drove out of that lot with a working key, a tired kid in the back seat, and one less problem to solve before morning. The dealer would have been a wait until the next day at the earliest, and way more money on top of that. That night, none of that mattered as much as just getting the car running. That is the job.
