Friday night in Oxnard, over in the Via Marina neighborhood, a couple came out of a show and their 2020 Prius just sat there. Doors would not respond to either fob. No unlock, no lights, nothing. They figured the car was done for the weekend and they would deal with it Monday.
Then they searched around and called me. I was about 15 minutes out.
Both fobs were HYQ14FBE-0410, four-button, and both had CR2032 cells that were just dead flat. That is the thing about couples who share a car. Both batteries age at the same rate. When one dies, the other is right behind it.
I popped the fob shells on the hood, swapped in fresh CR2032s, and ran a resync through my VVDI Key Tool to get the remote frequencies and the 8A transponder data talking clean again. Both fobs came back. Doors locked and unlocked from range. Push-button start fired on the first press.
The part that made the job worth writing about: she turned to him and said "I told you it was the batteries." He just nodded. That is how most of these go. Somebody already knew the answer but needed it confirmed.
They drove home that night. No tow, no dealer wait, no Monday morning headache. Everything I needed was already in the van.
