2004 Toyota Prius Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy near the Madera Road shopping area in Simi Valley had just picked up a used 2004 Prius off Craigslist. Good car, fair price, one smart key. The seller told him to get a spare on his own and said it would be easy.
He tried the hardware store first. They looked at the fob and told him they don't touch smart keys. Then he called the dealer. They quoted him a wait of over a week for the part, plus a programming appointment on top of that, and the price made him pause.
He found me and asked if I could just clone what he had. I met him in the parking lot, popped my VVDI2 on the OBD-II port under the dash, and read the immobilizer data off the smart key ECU. The 2004 Prius runs the Toyota Smart Key system on the 89941-47011 smart key computer, and these respond well to registration through the diagnostic port. I wrote a fresh MOZB31EG fob, cut the emergency TOY43 insert blade on my Condor, and registered the new key to the car.
He sat in the driver's seat and tested both fobs back to back. Push-button start, door handle touch-lock, trunk release. Both worked clean.
The part he liked most: having two keys means if one ever disappears, the next replacement is a simple add-a-key instead of an all-keys-lost job, which is a whole different level of cost and time.
