A guy in the Madera area had just bought a used 2004 Prius off Craigslist. Good deal, one fob, seller said it was all he had. He figured he'd get a spare cut at a hardware store for next to nothing.
That's not how this one works. The 2004 Prius doesn't take a metal key in an ignition cylinder. It's a push-button start with a proximity fob, and that fob has to be registered to the vehicle before the car will power on. Hardware stores can't help with that. Dealers can, but when he called, the wait time and the quote made him pause and start searching for other options.
He found me, called, and I drove out to Madera to meet him.
He had the one working fob with him, which matters a lot. Adding a second fob when you still have the first is a different job than starting from nothing. I used my diagnostic equipment at the OBD port, registered a second fob to the car alongside his original, and verified the push-button start responded to both. Then I checked that his original fob was still enrolled and working the same as before. That last step matters because some tools will wipe what's there if you're not careful.
He drove off with a backup fob for a fraction of what the dealer quoted. And now if he ever loses one, he's doing an add-a-key job, not an all-keys-lost reset. That gap in cost and complexity is real.
