A resident in Camarillo Heights called me on a Tuesday morning. His 2011 Prius was sitting in the guest parking area inside a gated complex, wouldn't start, and the tow company he'd already called had turned around at the gate because there was no one to escort them through.
He couldn't escort anyone because he had no working key.

That's the part most people don't think about on a Prius: there's a small conventional 12V battery that powers all the body electronics separately from the main hybrid pack, and when it's marginal, the smart key antenna and keyless entry are often the first things to get unreliable.
We topped the 12V situation, got the car powered up, then did the key work at the OBD port. New fob, the factory FCC ID on the replacement matched the original, emergency blade cut and tested, all four buttons confirmed. He watched the whole thing.
The car never left the lot. No flatbed, no dealer waiting room, no leaving it overnight. He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him the honest answer: a good chunk more, and that's before factoring in towing a Prius backward out of a gated complex.
