2023 Toyota Prius Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
The call came from a tire shop near South Winds in Oxnard. Not the kind of call I usually get from a tire shop.
A customer had brought his 2023 Prius in for a routine service and somewhere in the middle of the visit, the key situation fell apart. The shop had already called another locksmith. That locksmith ran a programming attempt, hit errors partway through, and left. The car was now sitting in the bay not accepting any key. The shop manager sounded tired when he explained it.
When a failed programming attempt leaves the security module in a fault state, you cannot just try again with the same approach. The module has logged the incomplete attempt and the OBD path is effectively closed off. I showed up with bench tools that read the security data directly from the module hardware, bypassing the communication lockout entirely. I pulled the module, read the stored data, cleared the fault record, and rebuilt the key registration clean from the beginning.
The fob the customer had, the factory three-button proximity key with the factory FCC ID, paired on the first attempt after the reset. That is how you know the previous error was about the module state, not the fob hardware.
The whole job took about an hour and a half on site. He avoided a flatbed, a multi-day dealer queue, and a bill that would have been significantly heavier. The tire shop has my number now.
