Out in the Daily Drive commercial area in Camarillo, a guy came back from a week-long trip, walked to his 2014 Prius in the lot, and got nothing. No chirp, no door unlock, no dash acknowledgment. Dead CR1632 in the HYQ14ACX fob.

I got there in about 40 minutes. Opened the door, connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port under the dash, and pulled the immobilizer status. Both his registered fobs still showed in the Toyota 4D system, page 128 02 on the transponder read. The dead battery had just killed the RF communication between the fob and the car's smart key ECU (part number 89990-47060 on these third-gen Prius models). No codes stored on the integration module, so the fix was clean: fresh CR1632, verify the fob buttons and proximity detection at each door handle, confirm push-button start from both driver and passenger seat positions.
He sat in the front seat and watched the whole thing. When the engine caught on the first press, he just leaned back and exhaled.
He drove home before dinner. His car never left the parking space he pulled into a week earlier.
