A guy in Mountclef Ridge over in Simi Valley called me about his 2003 Prius. He had one key left and wanted a spare. Simple job in theory. He'd already called the dealer and gotten a number that made him pause, so he went looking for another option.
I drove out and parked in front of his building. The 2003 Prius takes a specific key blank with a transponder chip inside the head. The blade gets decoded off the door lock or cut by code from the VIN. I decoded his lock, cut the blade, and then confirmed he still had his one working key with him.
That part matters. When you have a working key, the 2003 Prius lets you do an onboard relearn to register a second key. No OBD port tap needed. You use the existing key and the new one together in a timed sequence. It sounds fiddly the first time but it's a known procedure for this generation. The whole thing was done in about 25 minutes.
