2003 Toyota Prius Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A renter at an apartment complex over in Sycamore Square in Simi Valley called me about his 2003 Prius. He had one working transponder key and wanted a spare before something went wrong with it. Smart move. On these first-gen US Prius models, once you lose every key, the job gets harder and the price goes up because you're doing a full immobilizer reset instead of just cloning off a working master.

I parked next to his car and got to work. Used my TOY43 Lishi to decode the door lock. The Lishi reads the wafer positions inside the cylinder so I can cut a matching blade without tracing the original. His key was the PE-TOY43AT4 blank with the 4D-67 chip, which is the only transponder setup Toyota put in the NHW11 Prius.

Cut the blade on my mobile machine, then programmed the new 4D-67 chip through the OBD-II port using the existing master key to authorize the add. The whole thing took maybe 25 minutes, most of that being the Lishi decode because a couple of his lock wafers were worn down and needed a careful read.

He stood there watching and said he'd already blocked out half a day for the dealer. Instead he went back upstairs with two working keys and his afternoon back. The dealer would have wanted way more and a tow or a ride, since you can't exactly drive in to drop off your only key.
