A woman over in Old Town Simi had been nursing her 2002 Prius ignition for weeks. Some mornings it turned fine. Other mornings she sat in the parking lot near the yoga studio wiggling the key until it caught, running five minutes late every time. She finally called when it stopped turning entirely.
The dealer had already looked at it. Their quote was for a full ignition cylinder replacement, new keys, and reprogramming. She didn't love that number.
When I got there, I checked the cylinder before assuming anything. The lock itself was worn, wafers loose and catching on the key. The key was also showing wear at the cuts. Classic gradual failure on a 20-plus-year-old ignition that had probably seen one key its whole life. A full cylinder swap wasn't what she needed.
I decoded the lock, addressed the worn internals, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Then I handled the transponder programming on site so the immobilizer recognized the new key. The whole job was done in the parking lot, one visit.
The dealer quote covered parts she didn't need. What she actually had was a mechanical wear problem with a chip programming step at the end. That's a very different job, and a very different cost.
She texted me later that day. The key was sliding in clean and turning on the first try for the first time in months.
