2002 Toyota Prius Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman over in the Mountain Gate Plaza area of Simi Valley had been wrestling her 2002 Prius ignition for weeks. Some mornings the key turned fine. Other mornings she sat in the parking lot wiggling it for five minutes before the cylinder would budge.

The dealer told her she needed a full ignition replacement. New cylinder, new keys, full reprogram.

I checked the cylinder and it was not dead. The TOY43 wafer lock had a few worn wafers sitting loose, which is one of the most common calls I get on older Toyotas. Before I touched anything mechanical, I connected my ACDP to the immobilizer ID box and backed up the transponder registration data off the 93C46 EEPROM. That way if anything went sideways during the repair, the security side was already saved.

Then I decoded the lock, swapped the worn wafers, and cut a fresh TOY43 key matched to the repaired cylinder with a cloned 4C chip. Tested ignition on, ignition off, engine start. Smooth every time.

She stood there turning the key back and forth in the cylinder like she forgot what easy was supposed to feel like.

The dealer wanted to replace the whole assembly. I replaced what was actually worn. She drove off with a clean-turning ignition and a fresh key for a fraction of what they quoted her.
