Got a call from a guy over near Libbey Park in Ojai. His 2002 Tacoma remote had quit on him. All three buttons dead. He said he had been pressing the lock button harder and harder for the last two weeks, like volume would fix it. Then nothing.
He already had the replacement CR2032 from the drugstore, but he cracked the remote housing trying to pry it open with a flathead. The back clip snapped and the circuit board, the little green one marked with the BAB237131-056 FCC ID, was just sitting loose in two halves of broken plastic.
I carry the 08191-00922 remote for these. Swapped in a fresh CR2032, paired it to his truck using the door lock receiver programming sequence, and tested all three buttons from the driver door, the passenger side, and about forty feet back in the driveway. Clean response every time.
He stood there holding the broken one, turning it over in his hands like he was going to figure out where it went wrong. I told him the case plastic on these gets brittle after twenty years and the right tool is a coin in the seam, not a screwdriver tip.
Whole thing took about fifteen minutes. He kept his original key blade since the mechanical cut was still good. No tow, no dealer wait, done on-site for way less than what the dealership parts counter would have charged for the remote alone.
