A guy out in the East End called me on a Saturday morning. He had two problems: the fob on his 2002 Tacoma had stopped working, and his spare was somewhere in a box from his last move. He wasn't stranded, the truck started fine, but he'd been manually locking and unlocking for two weeks and was tired of it.
When I got there he had already tried a new CR2032. Good instinct, wrong result. The battery swap hadn't done anything.
I pulled the fob apart on the hood of his truck. The battery contacts looked fine at a glance, but one of them had a slight inward bow, barely perceptible. The cell was sitting in there loose enough that vibration from driving was probably breaking contact intermittently. I cleaned the contacts and bent the clip back out to where it could hold the battery with real tension.
Then I walked him through a basic receiver test, standing at different distances from the truck, checking that lock and unlock were actually reaching the module. Everything came back. Full range, all three buttons responding.
He asked what it would have cost to just replace the whole fob and get it reprogrammed. I told him to call me when he finds that spare in the moving boxes. We can add it to the truck for a fraction of what the dealer would charge.
