2020 Toyota Tacoma Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman in the Hot Springs area of Montecito waved me down in a Costco lot. Not literally, but close enough. She had called, gave me her location, and was leaning against her 2020 Tacoma when I pulled up.
She had one smart key, had lost it briefly, found it again, and wanted a spare before she lost it for good. The dealer had told her the job required an appointment, a wait, and a number that made her pause long enough to start looking for other options.
I set up next to the truck and connected through the OBD port. The 2020 Tacoma smart key system registers new fobs through diagnostic equipment, not through any button sequence or ignition trick. I had the right tool for it. New fob, cut to the vehicle, registered to the immobilizer. Lock, unlock, and the other buttons all tested. Emergency insert key verified in the door lock.
The whole thing took about 35 minutes. She had two working keys instead of one, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted. She asked me why dealers charge so much more. Honestly, it's part overhead, part scheduling, part captive market. The technology involved is exactly the same.
