The call came from a homeowner near Butterfly Beach in Montecito. His 2023 Tacoma was parked inside a gated complex in guest parking, and the fob had stopped working.

Not intermittent. Dead. He had already dug out the mechanical insert and confirmed the doors would unlock manually, so the truck was accessible, just not startable. The cells look similar in a blister pack if you're not reading closely. The smaller battery was sitting in the tray with enough contact to show a voltage reading but not enough to actually power the fob under the load of a transmission attempt. Classic half-contact situation.

Dropped in a correct CR2450, seated it properly, and the fob woke right up. Tested all four buttons, tested the door handle proximity response, started the truck. The whole thing took about twelve minutes on site.

He had already been quoted a replacement fob and programming at the dealer, assuming he could even get the truck there. He didn't need any of that. He needed the right battery seated correctly. That's the job sometimes, and I'd rather tell someone that than sell them something they don't need.
