A guy in the Birnam Wood neighborhood in Montecito called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He had one key for his 2022 Tacoma, it was still working fine, and he wanted a spare before a camping trip he had planned for the weekend. Simple job. I decoded his door lock cylinder to get the blade cut right, then sourced the key data from the VIN to confirm the correct fob spec. Cut the emergency blade, verified the fit, then went to the OBD port and registered the new fob to the vehicle's immobilizer. The truck requires diagnostic equipment for that step. No shortcut, no ignition dance. About 35 minutes total.
I tested every button, walked both door handles for touch unlock, and had him try the start button himself so he could feel it working before I packed up. He had a working spare in his hand before dinner.
He saved a good chunk off the dealer quote. But honestly the part he kept coming back to was that he never had to move the truck. He works from home. The idea of arranging a tow or driving across town just to hand over the keys and wait around was the part that bothered him more than the price.
