A woman in Blackstock had been living with a cracked Tacoma fob for a couple of months. She'd wrapped it in a rubber band to keep it from splitting further. The lock and unlock still worked most of the time, but the push-button start had gotten flaky. Some mornings it would throw a key-not-detected warning on the dash. Some mornings it was fine. New shell, cleaned the contact points, seated a fresh CR2032 correctly, transferred the board over. Tested every button. Tested the push-button start. Tested the door handle sensors. Everything worked clean.
She asked me what the dealer would have done differently. Honestly, they probably would have replaced the entire fob and programmed a new one, and it would have worked too. But you'd be paying for a new board, a new chip, and a full programming job when none of that was needed. The fix was the shell. I charged her a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and she drove off still holding the rubber band out of habit before she realized she didn't need it anymore.
