A woman in Blackstock had been living with a cracked Tacoma fob for a couple of months. She'd wrapped it in a rubber band to keep it from splitting further. The lock and unlock still worked most of the time, but the push-button start had gotten flaky. Some mornings it would throw a key-not-detected warning on the dash. Some mornings it was fine. She figured the whole fob was dying.
She called the dealer first. They quoted her a full smart key replacement, programmed, at a number that made her set the phone down for a second. She called me after that.
I met her in her cul-de-sac in Blackstock. She handed me the fob and the rubber band fell off in my palm. The shell had split clean along the seam on both sides, the kind of crack that happens when the key lives in a pocket with coins or gets dropped on pavement a few times. I popped it open on the hood of my van.
The board was fine. The chip was fine. What wasn't fine was the battery, which had shifted off-center inside the cracked housing and was making partial contact. That's the whole story. A bad contact on a CR2032 that wasn't even dead yet.
New shell, cleaned the contact points, seated a fresh CR2032 correctly, transferred the board over. Tested every button. Tested the push-button start. Tested the door handle sensors. Everything worked clean.
She asked me what the dealer would have done differently. Honestly, they probably would have replaced the entire fob and programmed a new one, and it would have worked too. But you'd be paying for a new board, a new chip, and a full programming job when none of that was needed. The fix was the shell. I charged her a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and she drove off still holding the rubber band out of habit before she realized she didn't need it anymore.
