Got a call from a woman staying at an Airbnb in the Wagon Wheel neighborhood in Oxnard. Her only key for a 2011 Tacoma had snapped at the blade, right where the metal meets the plastic head. The transponder chip was still alive inside the housing, but with no blade she had no way to turn the ignition cylinder.
She had already called the dealer. They told her to tow it in, earliest appointment was late the next day. She was supposed to check out by noon.
I pulled up to the rental that evening. The broken key head still had the "G" stamp visible on the shoulder, confirming the 4D-67 transponder chip inside. I decoded the ignition wafers using my Lishi TOY43 pick and read the cuts. Then I cut a fresh TOY43 blade in the van and paired it with a new 4D-67 chip using my programmer through the OBD-II port. The immobilizer accepted the key on the first turn.
The remote was a separate piece. Her GQ43VT20T fob still worked, so I left it alone. People mix these up a lot on the second-gen Tacoma. The remote and the transponder key are two independent items. One starts the truck, the other locks the doors.
She was back on the road before dinner. No tow, no overnight wait, and for a fraction of what the dealer quoted her.
