Got a call from a guy out at Rose Valley Campground in Ojai around dusk. His 2009 Tacoma was parked at his campsite and the remote had stopped doing anything. No lock chirp, no unlock, nothing from any of the three buttons. He was convinced the truck was bricked.
I asked him to try the mechanical key in the door. He did. It opened. Then he turned the ignition and it started right up. That is when I could hear the confusion over the phone.
The 2009 Tacoma on most trims does not have a transponder chip in the ignition key. The GQ43VT20T remote is a separate piece. It handles lock, unlock, and panic, but the truck does not care about it for starting. His actual problem was a dead CR2032 and one corroded battery terminal inside the remote housing.
I drove out, popped the remote open on his tailgate, cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and reprogrammed the remote to his receiver using the driver door lock cylinder procedure. Whole thing took maybe fifteen minutes including the drive through the canyon.
He had already looked up dealer service hours in Thousand Oaks and was planning to leave the campsite early the next morning. Didn't need to. The truck was never broken, just a remote with a spent battery and some gunk on the terminals.
