It was around 9pm when the call came in from an empty office park in the Meiners Oaks area of Ojai. The guy had lost his only key. Not misplaced it. Gone. He'd checked his pockets, retraced his steps through the office, walked the sidewalk with his phone flashlight. Nothing.

The 2004 Tacoma uses a transponder key with a separate remote fob, and once I had the VIN I knew exactly what I was coming out with. I prepped the right key blank and had the fob ready before I left. He stayed with the truck, I pulled up to the parking lot, and we did the whole job under the lot lights. Cut the blade to the vehicle, programmed the transponder so the immobilizer would accept it, then went through the fob sync and tested every button and confirmed the truck started clean.
He drove home that night. The dealer was closed, would have needed a tow to even get started, and would have taken days. The VIN is the one thing that speeds everything up on my end.
