Met a contractor up in Hot Springs Trail who'd been clicking his 2025 Tacoma fob harder each day, like that would fix the range issue.
Started working from maybe 10 feet. Then 5. Then he had to practically touch the door handle. Classic dying battery pattern, except his CR2450 tested at 3.1V on my meter. Good voltage, bad connection.
I popped the HYQ14FBX case on his tailgate. The battery clips looked clean but the positive terminal had backed off just enough to make intermittent contact. Common issue on this new body style according to TSB T-SB-0087-24. The deeper battery well doesn't give much feedback when you think it's seated.
Cleaned the terminals with DeoxIT, bent the positive clip back to factory tension, and clicked the CR2450 home until it couldn't go deeper. Range test from 50 feet out. All four buttons responded instantly. Touch unlock worked from a normal arm's reach again.
He asked what the dealer would charge for the same fix. Based on forum posts, they're billing diagnostic time plus a new fob "just to be safe." We're talking several hundred versus the service call you already know was worth it when your truck works again.
