She was sitting at the sushi place off Ojai Avenue near Mira Monte when her bag went off the chair next to her. Keys, wallet, phone. She borrowed a phone from the server, called the police, then her husband, then me.
Her 2005 Tacoma was sitting in the lot with zero keys. Her husband called the dealer while she waited. I connected my programmer to the OBD port, cleared the existing key data out of the immobilizer, and registered two new keys from scratch. The remote fob and the transponder key are separate components on this truck, and both need to be sorted. I decoded the lock cylinder, cut the blade to match, confirmed the transponder was enrolled, then ran through the remote pairing for both fobs.
She had two working keys before the officer finished taking her report in the parking lot.
The stolen key can still physically slide into the door lock. It just will not fire the engine. That is always the first thing I explain when a key gets taken rather than lost. The immobilizer does not care that the key exists. It only cares whether that key is in memory. And I had already erased it.
The dealer estimate was more than the tow plus three times what she paid me. She drove home to Mira Monte that night.
