A woman staying at an Airbnb in the Rio Lindo neighborhood in Oxnard called me one evening. Her only smart key for a 2018 Tacoma TRD Off-Road had stopped communicating. Push-to-start gave her nothing. The dash just sat there with "Key Not Detected" like the fob didn't exist.

I pulled up to the rental about forty minutes after her call. First thing I checked was the emergency start method, holding the dead fob against the start button. Nothing. The fob's CR2032 was corroded at one contact, but even a fresh battery didn't bring it back. The 8A transponder chip inside had failed, not the battery.
I connected to the OBD-II port and ran the immobilizer registration. The 2018 Tacoma uses Toyota's DST-AES protocol on the H-chip platform, so the new HYQ14FBA fob needs to be written with the correct encrypted seed. Took about 25 minutes for the security handshake to complete and the new fob to register. Cut the emergency insert blade in the van using the existing lock code.
Walked all four doors, tested lock, unlock, and trunk release. Push-to-start fired on the first press. She watched the whole thing from the driveway and just nodded slowly, like she was waiting for something else to go wrong.
