Downtown Ojai on a weekday afternoon. A guy had his Tacoma parked near the shops on Ojai Avenue and his only key was somewhere he could not account for. Not lost in the car, not dropped nearby. Just gone. He had the fob in his pocket but the fob does not start the truck, and at that point he was stuck staring at the door.

He called me, I drove out, and the first thing I did was decode the lock cylinder. Reading the wafer positions inside gives me the exact cut depths for a working blade without touching the original. Once I had the mechanical decode done, I cut a replacement key blade on site.

The blade gets you in the door and into the ignition, but on these Tacomas you still have to deal with the immobilizer. With no working key in the system, I connected through the OBD port, cleared the old key memory, and registered the new transponder. Truck started in the same spot he was parked. He did not have to arrange a tow, did not wait several days for a dealer appointment, and paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted when he called them first out of habit. Total time from my arrival to a running engine was under an hour.

All-keys-lost sounds like the worst version of the problem. On the 2008 Tacoma, it is a well-mapped field job with the right tools.
