1997 Chevrolet Malibu
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

1997 Chevrolet Malibu Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Sunset Hills, Thousand Oaks, around 9pm. He was standing next to his 1997 Malibu in a parking structure, no key, no idea where it went. He'd checked everywhere. His voice had that particular edge people get when they realize they're genuinely stuck and it's getting dark.

He didn't have his registration on him. Didn't remember where the VIN was. Was about ten minutes away from calling a tow.

I walked him through it over the phone. Lower driver's side of the windshield, right at the base. He found it. Pulled up his insurance app and had proof of ownership right there. Once I had the VIN, I already knew what I was dealing with: a standard mechanical key, no electronics involved, just cut and go.

By the time I pulled up, I had the right blank ready. I decoded the lock, cut the key on site, and he was turning the ignition inside of twenty minutes. The parking structure lighting was not ideal. That part is always glamorous.

He mentioned the dealer on the way out. He'd actually called them first, before he called me. They told him to have it towed in, that they'd need to order the key, and that they couldn't get to it until the following afternoon at the earliest. He saved a good chunk just by calling a mobile locksmith instead, and he drove home that same night.

The VIN is still the most useful thing you can give me before I arrive. Cuts the prep time down and means I show up with exactly what I need.
