2000 Chevrolet Malibu
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to me in Peach Hill?

Usually within 30 minutes of your call, depending on where I am when you reach me. Everything I need for a 2000 Malibu, the replacement fob, the CR2032 cells, the programming references, comes with me. There's no supply run, no waiting for a bay to open.

Q: Can I get a replacement fob today?

Yes. Same-day is the standard, not the exception. I keep common GM fobs stocked, and the 2000 Malibu uses a fob that's been around long enough that sourcing isn't an issue. You don't have to wait for a dealer to order parts or schedule a drop-off. One call, I come to you in Moorpark, and you're done before the day gets away from you.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or do I need to buy one from you?

If the fob you bought carries the correct factory FCC ID for this vehicle, it'll work. Bring it. I'll program it on site. Where owners run into trouble is buying a generic or mismatched fob because the listing looked close enough. If it's the wrong one, programming won't take no matter what. Check the factory FCC ID on your original fob or on the dealer part number before ordering.

Q: My fob stopped working but the battery is fine. What else could it be?

A few things. On this generation of GM remote, if someone accidentally triggered the programming mode and introduced a different fob, your existing fob can get wiped from memory. The car only holds a limited number of fobs, and a new enrollment overwrites the old ones if all aren't present at the same time. The other thing that happens is internal fob damage from drops or moisture.

2000 Chevrolet Malibu Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman in Peach Hill on a Monday morning. She'd lost her only fob for a 2000 Malibu and the dealer told her to come in Thursday. She had places to be that day, not that week.

The Malibu started fine because the ignition is a regular turn-key, no transponder enrollment to worry about. The problem was purely the remote: no lock, no unlock, nothing. She'd been manually working every door for two days and was done with it.

I pulled up to her place in Moorpark, confirmed the fob battery, and went through the programming sequence with the fob she'd ordered online. These early-2000s GM remotes have an onboard programming mode you enter through the door lock switch and the ignition, so no OBD port needed. The sequence is timing-sensitive, though. You have a short window to enter each fob or the system kicks you back out and you start over.

Got it seated on the first run. Tested lock, unlock, and the remaining buttons from across the driveway. Everything live.

The whole stop was about 25 minutes. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number that made her pause, plus the Thursday timeline. Neither of those worked for a Monday.

How long does a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu key replacement take?▼

Depends on what you need. If you already have a working key and just need a second fob added, the onboard programming sequence on this generation of Malibu is quick once everything's in order. On-site time is usually 20 to 30 minutes, and a good chunk of that is just confirming the replacement fob and testing every button. All-keys-lost on the remote side takes a little longer because you're starting the enrollment from scratch.
