2006 Chevrolet Malibu
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you are not one of those scam locksmiths?

Fair question. Before anyone rolls to your location, ask for a license number, the company name, and a firm quote for your specific vehicle. Scam operations lowball you on the phone and add fabricated fees in your driveway. One pattern that shows up constantly: a quote for the key cut, then a surprise "programming fee" that doubles or triples the bill. Another version charges per key plus invented code-access fees.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like my original?

Yes. The key blade gets cut to your vehicle and the transponder chip gets programmed to your immobilizer in the same visit. We test it through multiple start cycles before we leave. A key that cranks the engine but stalls out, or one that works once and then stops being recognized, means the programming step was skipped or done wrong. That does not happen on our end. You get a fully working key, verified on site.

Q: My 2006 Malibu cranks but shuts off immediately after starting. Could this be a key problem?

Yes, and this is one of the more common calls I get on this generation. When the immobilizer does not recognize the transponder chip, the engine gets a very brief moment of fuel and then cuts. It cranks normally, catches for a second, and dies. People assume fuel pump, battery, or a mechanical issue, and sometimes spend money chasing those first.

Q: Can I program a second key for my 2006 Malibu myself at home?

Not on this vehicle. There is no owner-accessible relearn sequence for adding a transponder key on this generation. Programming requires a dedicated tool that connects to the vehicle and enrolls the new chip. If you bought a key blank online, you still need a locksmith or dealer with the right equipment to complete the programming before it will start the car. The blade alone does nothing without the transponder step.

2006 Chevrolet Malibu Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Saturday night in Montecito, down near Coast Village Road, a couple walked out to their 2006 Malibu and it cranked but immediately died. Over and over. They had one key. It was the original. It looked fine. The cut was still sharp and the head was intact. Nothing obviously wrong.

They called me thinking it was a battery issue or something with the ignition. I was already in the area.

When I got there and tested the key, the transponder chip had failed inside the head. It happens. The plastic ages, the chip loses communication, and the immobilizer cuts the fuel after that brief initial crank. The car is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. It just looks like a mechanical problem until you know what you are looking at.

I cut a new key blade to the vehicle, programmed the replacement transponder chip to the immobilizer, and tested it through several start cycles. Started clean every time.

The couple had already been googling dealers, talking about a tow, figuring out how to get to work Monday. They did not need any of that. Done on site, both of them standing there watching, and they drove home the same night. The dealer comparison did not even come up. They were just relieved.

Chevrolet Malibu Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Chevrolet vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, which is the state body that regulates automotive locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance. For a 2006 Malibu, the transponder programming requires professional equipment that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer. You want someone credentialed handling that, not a hardware-store key cutter who will hand you a key that cranks but won't run.
