Three things to watch for. First, they refuse to give you a firm total for your specific vehicle before they show up. A real locksmith knows what a 2011 Malibu transponder key job costs and will tell you up front. Second, they arrive and either cannot program the key at all or claim they need a second visit to finish. Third, the price doubles once they are in your driveway. Sudden "chip fee," "security access fee," or "programming surcharge" tacked on after the fact is a bad sign.

Usually fine, with one caveat. Aftermarket transponder keys for the 2011 Malibu are widely available and most of them program without issue as long as the chip type inside matches what this vehicle accepts. That pattern, cranks and dies right away, is the classic sign that the immobilizer did not recognize the transponder. Check the dashboard for a security or theft-related warning light. If it is on or flashing during the crank, the key is almost certainly the issue, either a failed chip, a key that was never properly programmed, or a used key that is still registered to a different vehicle.

Worth ruling out first: try a second key if you have one. If the second key starts the car normally, your primary key's chip has failed and needs replacement. If neither key works, or if you only have one key, that is where I come in.
