A dad near the San Ysidro Trail area in Montecito called on a Tuesday. His 2004 Malibu cranked but would not fire, and the SECURITY light on the dash was steady. He had a toddler buckled into the back seat and had already called the Chevy dealer. They told him Friday at the earliest, and that was just the appointment, not the fix.
I pulled up that same afternoon. The Malibu was sitting in the parking lot of his kid's pediatrician. Engine cranked strong, fuel pump primed, but the PCM was cutting the fuel injectors because the Passlock II signal was out of range.
Ran my diagnostic on the Body Control Module. The Passlock sensor in the ignition lock cylinder was sending garbage resistance values. The BCM was seeing that and killing fuel delivery every time. Classic failure on these sixth-gen Malibus.
I replaced the lock cylinder assembly, recut his key to match, and ran the 10-minute security relearn so the BCM could store the new valid resistance. Cranked it. Fired right up. SECURITY light off.
He was watching from the sidewalk, bouncing the toddler on his hip the whole time. When the engine caught, he just nodded, like he had been holding his breath for an hour.
Tuesday call, Tuesday fix. No tow truck, no borrowed rides, no Friday maybe.
