Got a call from a woman near Cold Spring Trail in Montecito. Her 2005 Malibu cranked for half a second, then nothing. Dash lit up with "THEFT SYSTEM" and the security light stayed solid. She'd been through this before, she said, and the last time her husband did the 10-minute relearn three times in a row and it eventually worked. This time it wouldn't clear.
She had one working key left and it was pretty chewed up. The blade was worn enough that the Passlock sensor inside the lock cylinder was getting inconsistent resistance readings. That's the thing with Passlock II on these seventh-gen Malibus. The security isn't in the key head. It's in the mechanical interaction between the key, the lock cylinder, and the Hall-effect sensor (part of the ignition lock assembly, GM part 15822350).
I cut a fresh B111-PT blank to match, then ran the security relearn through the BCM with my Autel. Three cycles, about 11 minutes each, which is the factory procedure. Once the BCM accepted the new key's resistance value and stored it, the "THEFT SYSTEM" message dropped and she had a clean start.
She sat on the porch watching the whole time. When it fired up she just said, "That's been ruining my mornings for two weeks."
Gave her the fresh key and a spare. The whole visit was done in under 40 minutes.
