A body shop near Miramar Beach in Montecito called me about a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu that was dead in their lot. Another locksmith had already tried making a key for it. Tried and failed.
What happened was the first guy lost communication mid-program and left the BCM in a fault state. The dash was throwing "Service Theft Deterrent System" and the security light was solid, not flashing. The car would crank for about two seconds and die. Classic PK3+ lockout. The body shop said the other locksmith told them to tow it to a Chevy dealer.
I started at the OBD-II port, but the previous bad attempt had the BCM refusing to handshake through normal channels. So I pulled the BCM, a 20843248, and went to the bench with my ACDP. Read the security data off the EEPROM directly, cleared the theft deterrent fault, rebuilt the PK3+ seed and key values, and loaded it back.
Mounted the BCM, cut a fresh B111-PT blade, and ran the transponder relearn. Security light flashed, then went off. Engine caught and held.
I walked the body shop guys through what went wrong so they'd know the signs next time. The whole job ran about an hour and a half, which is longer than a normal Malibu key. But the car left under its own power, same day, no flatbed, no dealer wait.
