Got called out to Matilija Canyon where a teacher's 2023 Malibu decided Wednesday morning was the perfect time to flash "No Remote Detected" on the dash.
She'd already tried the obvious moves: new CR2032, holding the fob against the start button, even that old trick of wrapping the fob in foil she read online. Nothing. The car would start with the fob pressed to the button, but remote functions were dead.
I plugged in my Autel IM608 and pulled codes. B1362-00 in the BCM: lost communication with the remote. The HYQ4ES fob wasn't completely dead, just barely hanging on. These use rolling code that needs to stay in sync with the BCM, and when the battery gets that low, it can drop out of sequence.
Fresh CR2032, properly seated with good spring tension. Then the relearn: ignition on, hold lock and unlock together until the horn chirps twice. The BCM accepted the resync and all five buttons came back to life. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, remote start.
She mentioned the dealer wanted her to drop it off Thursday, order a new fob, and pick up Monday. Instead, fifteen minutes in her driveway and she made it to first period on time.
