A guy near Glen Tavern Inn in Santa Paula had just picked up a used 2019 Malibu from a small lot. Nice car, one key. The lot told him to get a spare on his own. He figured a hardware store could handle it. That is not how these work anymore.

Read the transponder data through the OBD-II port on my Autel IM608 Pro, confirmed the key ID against the body control module, and loaded the new fob into the system as an add-key procedure. The BCM on these ninth-gen Malibus stores up to eight key IDs, so adding a second one is clean. Cut the emergency insert blade on site, synced all five buttons including remote start, and tested passive entry on both front doors and the trunk.
The part he did not expect: I walked him through the mechanical backup. There is a hidden keyhole behind a cap on the driver door handle. Most owners never notice it until the fob battery dies in a parking garage. He popped it open himself so he would remember.
