1998 Subaru Outback
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my 1998 Outback to the dealer if I have no keys?

No. The dealer route exists but it is not your only option. For a 1998 Outback with no keys, a mobile locksmith can decode the lock and cut a replacement at your location. You do not need a tow, and you do not need a dealer appointment. The dealer will charge a good chunk more for the same metal key. Save the tow bill.

Q: How long does a replacement key take on a 1998 Subaru Outback?

Fast. Once I'm at the car, cutting from code or decoding the lock and cutting to match typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes total. There's no programming wait, no module work, no countdown timer. It's a mechanical key on a mechanical lock. Test it in the ignition, test it in the doors, done. Same-day, single visit.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key from the lock if I have zero paperwork and no original key?

Yes, and this comes up more than you'd think on vehicles this age. The lock cylinder itself holds the cut information. A locksmith reads the depths of the tumblers directly from the cylinder and uses that to cut a working key. No code, no original key, no problem. On a 1998 Outback, the door lock or ignition cylinder can both be decoded this way. I bring the tools for it on every call.

Q: My 1998 Outback key turns but feels sloppy or stiff. Do I need a new lock or just a new key?

Usually just a new key. A worn key that has been copied a few times, or one that has been on a heavy keychain for years, will start to feel off in the cylinder. The lock itself on these is generally durable. A fresh key cut to the correct depths fixes the feel.

1998 Subaru Outback Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy came to me over in Marina West, Oxnard. He had a 1998 Subaru Outback and one key left, worn down to the point where it was starting to be stubborn in the ignition. Not stuck, just hesitant. He wanted a spare before it got worse.

He asked me flat out whether I'd be cutting him a real key or some cheap blank that would snap off in the lock. Fair thing to ask.

I pulled the key, read the cut on the original, and transferred it to a quality blank right there in the lot. Then I tested it in the ignition and both door locks while he watched. The new key turned cleaner than his worn original.

He mentioned the dealer. I told him what they'd charge for the same piece of metal on a 98. He did the math himself.

No tow, no appointment, no waiting room. Just a replacement key cut to his vehicle, done at his car, in Marina West.

“Marco was the best locksmith I've ever dealt with. I met up with him to have a replacement fob programmed for my mom's car, and he gave me an extremely fair rate and was very pleasant to deal with. Rare qualities for a locksmith. Thanks Marco!”

Subaru Outback Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 1998 Subaru Outback. Can you still make one?▼

Yes. On a 1998 Outback, all-keys-lost is not the complicated scenario it is on newer vehicles. This is a metal key on an ignition cylinder. If you have the key code from your original paperwork or the door jamb, I can cut a replacement from code. If not, I can decode the lock cylinder directly and cut a key to match. Either way, I come to you and get it done on site without a tow.
