Just finished a job near Harry A. Lyon Park where a nurse's 2025 Outback wouldn't recognize her only smart key. Started with the classic "Key Not Detected" message, then degraded to nothing.
She'd already been to AutoZone for a new CR2032. Still dead. The dealer wanted her to flatbed it in, wait three days for programming, plus whatever the diagnostic would run. She found me through a coworker who'd used us for her Crosstrek.
I pulled up in my van and ran a quick diagnostic. The BCM showed stored code B2799 for key communication failure. Opened the HYQ14AKB fob, found corrosion on the battery contacts from an old leak. The new battery was fine, but it couldn't make proper connection.
Cleaned the contacts with DeoxIT, verified voltage at the terminals, then tested communication with my IM508. The BCM picked it up immediately. Cleared the fault code, cycled the ignition ten times to verify stability. Even tested the touch-lock sensors on all four doors since those run through the same antenna system.
She mentioned the dealer quoted her two hours just for initial diagnostics. We were done in 35 minutes, right there in her apartment complex lot. Same OEM fob working like new for a fraction of what they wanted.
