My key shell is cracking and one button is barely hanging on. Can you replace just the shell?

Yes, and it's worth doing before the shell breaks apart completely and you lose a piece of the button contact. The 2003 Outback fob housing wears out, especially at the button edges, and aftermarket shells vary a lot in quality. When I do a shell swap, the internals come out of the old housing and go into a new one. Because the electronics stay intact and untouched, there's nothing to reprogram. The blade key is a separate piece on this generation, so that stays as-is. If the blade is worn or cracked at the bow, I can address that separately, cut to your vehicle on site.

What does "remote" mean for the 2003 Subaru Outback? Is it the same as a smart key?

On this generation Outback, a remote setup means you have two separate pieces: a metal key blade that you insert and turn in the ignition, and a separate key fob with four buttons for locking and unlocking the doors. The fob and the ignition key work independently of each other. Smart keys, by contrast, are a single unit where the car detects the fob nearby and lets you start without inserting anything. The 2003 Outback does not work that way. If you lose the fob, you can still drive. If you lose the blade key, you cannot.

Start with the blade key itself, not the fob. On this generation, the ignition key is separate from the remote. A warning tied to the ignition side means the car is not reading the key correctly in the cylinder, which is a different problem from a dead fob battery.

If the car starts but the remote does nothing, that's a fob issue, and a fresh CR2025 is the first move. If the car is flat-out refusing to start and showing a security warning, don't keep cranking. Repeated failed attempts can trigger a lockout period on the immobilizer side.

One thing to know about 2003 Outbacks specifically: these are old enough that years of wear on the ignition cylinder can cause intermittent read issues even with a good key. If swapping the battery and testing a spare key doesn't resolve it, the problem may be vehicle-side rather than key-side.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2003 Outback. Can I program it myself?

This one gets asked a lot, and the answer is: it depends on what you mean by program. The 2003 Outback does have an onboard remote registration sequence that owners can do themselves without any special tools. It involves a specific sequence using the door lock switch and the ignition. If you follow it correctly with a compatible replacement fob, the car will register it. The fob has to be the right one for this year and model, not just any Subaru remote.

Where people run into trouble is buying a fob that looks identical but isn't the right match, or going through the sequence incorrectly and putting the system into a state where nothing seems to work. If you've already tried the self-registration sequence and it didn't take, that's where I come in. I can verify whether the fob is actually compatible and complete the registration on site.

My 2003 Outback fob range has gotten really short. Is the fob dying or is something wrong with the car?

Short range is almost always the CR2025 going low before it dies completely. A weak battery transmits a weaker signal, so the fob works at two feet but not twenty. Swap the battery first.

If range is still poor with a fresh battery, check the new cell is seated flat against both contacts. A slightly tilted battery in the tray is a common cause of continued weak signal after a battery change.

If both of those check out and range is still bad, the fob's internal antenna or transmitter board may be degraded. At that point, a replacement fob that's properly registered to the car is the practical fix. These are 20-plus-year-old electronics at this point and some of them are just worn out.
